The Edith Södergran project

In 2003 Fazakerley, while recovering from heart problems, stumbled upon a book of poems by the Finnish/Swedish poet Edith Södergran. As a young man he had read her poems and the thought of illuminating them now began to grow. He started studying her interest in especially Nietzsche and her short life lived in the war-torn border region between Finland and Russia in the early part of the 20th century.

Gordon saw her as an example of  life in the 20th century and started to paint episodes from her life and poems. By the end of his life, he had painted 44 pictures in the series, all canvases of 100 x 150 cm. His idea was to create a book, but it was never realised as his health gradually deteriorated.

Some of the pictures where however published in the Danish art magazine “Billedkunst” 15. no. 1, May 2007. The series in its entirety can be seen in this database. Here are a few examples of pictures from the series photographed by Jakob Jakobsen.
